Job Purpose
Reporting to the Depot Manager, the Gantry Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient loading of petroleum products into road tankers at the depot’s loading gantry.
The role involves planning and controlling gantry operations, including pre-loading truck inspections, bay allocation, product loading, metering, and sealing. The successful candidate must ensure that every tanker is loaded with the correct product and quantity against a valid loading order.
The Gantry Supervisor will also ensure compliance with company standard operating procedures, statutory requirements, fuel marking requirements where applicable, and Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) standards for meter accuracy. Any loading discrepancies, abnormal conditions, or safety concerns must be promptly escalated to the Depot Manager.
Key Responsibilities
1. Gantry Operations and Product Loading
- Plan and control loading operations, including bay allocation, truck sequencing, and product loading, to meet daily dispatch schedules.
- Ensure every tanker is loaded with the correct product grade and quantity in the appropriate compartments against a valid and authorized loading order.
- Confirm that loading arms, meters, preset controllers, earthing systems, and overfill-protection systems are functional before loading begins.
- Monitor truck queues and turnaround times, taking appropriate action to minimize waiting periods and loading delays.
- Verify that all inspection, loading, and sealing activities are completed safely and accurately.
2. Safety, Health, Environment and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure every tanker passes the required pre-loading safety inspection, including verification of valid documents, empty and clean compartments, earthing, fire extinguishers, and driver personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Refuse loading to vehicles that do not meet the required safety and compliance standards.
- Enforce gantry safety rules for drivers and transporters, including mandatory PPE, no-smoking requirements, restrictions on ignition sources, restricted-area access controls, and site speed limits.
- Comply with applicable Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) requirements for product loading and dispatch, including fuel marking where applicable.
- Maintain readiness of spill-response equipment and firefighting systems.
- Immediately report abnormal operating conditions, safety concerns, and suspected product-quality issues to the Depot Manager.
3. Metering, Documentation and Product Accountability
- Verify metered quantities against loading orders and approve loading tickets and delivery notes for every tanker.
- Ensure all loaded compartments are properly sealed and seal numbers are accurately recorded before releasing tankers.
- Monitor meter performance and coordinate meter proving and calibration in accordance with WMA requirements.
- Investigate and escalate misloads, overloading, underloading, and suspected product losses to the Depot Manager and Stock Reconciliation Officer.
- Maintain accurate loading logs, daily throughput reports, and shift handover records.
- Provide daily loaded-volume data to the Stock Reconciliation Officer to support stock reconciliation.
4. Team Supervision and Performance Management
- Directly supervise Product Loaders on shift, allocating personnel to loading bays and establishing clear safety and operational standards.
- Coach, mentor, and develop loading team members to strengthen operational capability and promote a strong safety culture.
- Manage team attendance, shift scheduling, and performance in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Ensure the loading team consistently follows established operating procedures and safety requirements.
5. Coordination and Communication
- Coordinate with the Dispatch Supervisor on loading orders, truck scheduling, and customer priorities.
- Liaise with the Tank Farm Supervisor regarding tank line-ups and product availability for loading.
- Coordinate with the Terminal Engineer on gantry equipment maintenance.
- Communicate operational issues, loading discrepancies, and safety concerns promptly to the relevant personnel.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering, Petroleum Technology, or a relevant technical field.
- At least five years of experience in a busy petroleum depot loading or dispatch operation.
- Hands-on experience with road tanker top-loading and bottom-loading systems, flow meters, and preset controllers.
- Demonstrated experience using Terminal Automation Systems (TAS) in loading operations.
- Good knowledge of road tanker safety standards, pre-loading inspections, and gantry emergency response procedures.
- Good knowledge of EWURA requirements, fuel marking, and WMA metrology standards applicable to product loading.
