About Shanta Gold
Shanta Gold is a gold mining company with operations in Tanzania. Through its mining activities, the company focuses on gold production and the maintenance of safe, reliable, and efficient mining operations. The Singida Gold Mine is located in Singida Region, Tanzania.
Job Summary
Shanta Mining Company Limited is inviting applications from qualified and experienced candidates for the position of HME Mechanic at Singida Gold Mine.
The HME Mechanic will be responsible for preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and mechanical repairs of mine dewatering pumps, which will be the primary area of responsibility. The role supports reliable mine dewatering and the timely restoration of critical equipment as the mine increasingly relies on its own pump fleet.
The successful candidate will also maintain other site pumps and heavy mobile equipment as assigned, working alongside existing HME mechanics and fitters. An important part of the position is providing practical coaching and skills transfer to team members to strengthen internal maintenance capabilities and reduce dependence on external specialist technicians.
Technical support will be provided during assigned working hours and through approved roster and call-out arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Dewatering Pump Maintenance and Repairs
- Carry out preventive maintenance, inspections, and mechanical repairs on diesel-driven dewatering pumps in accordance with manufacturer manuals and service intervals.
- Diagnose and repair pump and engine faults, including failure to prime, low flow or pressure, overheating, leakage, and abnormal noise.
- Inspect, repair, and replace pump components such as impellers, wear parts, shafts, bearings, seals, and couplings.
- Check pump alignment and clearances.
- Inspect hoses, pipework, strainers, valves, and connections to identify air leaks, restrictions, or damage affecting pump performance.
- Support pump installation, relocation, commissioning, and return to service.
- Verify pump priming and operating conditions after maintenance.
2. Diesel Engine and Mechanical Systems Maintenance
- Inspect and maintain diesel engines and associated fuel, cooling, lubrication, air intake, exhaust, and starting systems.
- Coordinate electrical faults with the electrical maintenance team.
- Maintain other site pumps and heavy mobile equipment as assigned, including engines, hydraulic systems, driveline, brakes, and steering.
3. Maintenance Planning and Documentation
- Maintain accurate service records, job cards, maintenance schedules, and a prioritized backlog of equipment defects.
- Identify required spare parts, service kits, and tools in advance.
- Support minimum-stock planning for critical maintenance supplies.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and report equipment condition, associated risks, and expected restoration times.
4. Team Support and Continuous Improvement
- Provide on-the-job coaching and skills transfer to mechanics, fitters, and other relevant team members.
- Investigate recurring equipment failures and recommend practical improvements.
- Work effectively with operations, maintenance planning teams, and supplier technical representatives.
- Perform other related mechanical maintenance duties as assigned.
5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
- Apply safe work practices during all maintenance activities.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures and equipment isolation requirements.
- Ensure pressure is safely released before relevant maintenance work.
- Apply appropriate lifting procedures, field maintenance safety measures, and spill-prevention controls.
- Comply with applicable site safety and environmental requirements.
Education and Professional Qualifications
Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications or an equivalent recognized qualification in a relevant discipline:
- Diploma in Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Plant Mechanics, Fitter Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Full Technician Certificate in a relevant mechanical discipline.
- Trade Test Grade I in a relevant mechanical discipline.
- An equivalent recognized technical qualification.
Additional requirements and advantages include:
- Relevant manufacturer training in diesel engines and dewatering pumps is an advantage.
- Computer literacy is required.
- Ability to use job cards, spreadsheets, and a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is required.
Work Experience Requirements
Candidates should meet the following experience requirements:
- At least five years of relevant mechanical maintenance experience.
- A minimum of three years of hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting experience with diesel-driven dewatering pumps in mining, quarrying, construction, or a comparable environment.
- Demonstrated experience in preventive maintenance, breakdown diagnosis, and pump repairs.
- Practical experience maintaining other industrial pumps and heavy mobile equipment, including diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Experience coaching mechanics and fitters.
- Ability to work effectively with operations teams, maintenance planners, and supplier technical teams.
Important: General heavy mobile equipment (HME) experience alone does not satisfy the specific requirement for hands-on diesel-driven dewatering pump maintenance experience.
Required Technical Knowledge and Skills
Dewatering Pumps
- Understanding of pump operating principles, priming, suction and discharge arrangements, pump curves, head, and flow.
- Ability to recognize cavitation, dry running, and other damaging operating conditions.
- Competence in diagnosing pump performance problems and restoring equipment to service.
Diesel Engines and Mechanical Fitting
- Diesel engine troubleshooting.
- Mechanical fitting and maintenance of seals, bearings, and couplings.
