About DP World
DP World is a global supply chain solutions provider operating across ports and terminals, marine services, logistics, and technology. The company employs more than 111,000 people from 159 nationalities across 77 countries on six continents.
DP World focuses on improving the flow of international trade through integrated logistics infrastructure, technological innovation, and efficient end-to-end supply chain solutions. Its operations support the movement of goods worldwide, with a commitment to safety, sustainability, innovation, and inclusion.
Job Purpose
DP World is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to oversee the planning, development, reliability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of electrical infrastructure at its port terminal in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The successful candidate will provide electrical engineering leadership throughout the asset lifecycle, from concept development, feasibility studies, and design to construction, testing, commissioning, daily operations, preventive maintenance, rehabilitation, and asset replacement.
The role aims to ensure that medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical systems remain safe, reliable, energy-efficient, compliant with applicable regulations, and capable of supporting continuous 24-hour port operations, heavy infrastructure development, and future terminal expansion.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Infrastructure Management and Operational Support
- Provide technical oversight of port electrical assets, including MV/LV distribution networks, main substations, transformers, ring main units (RMUs), switchgear, emergency generators, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, floodlighting, earthing, lightning protection, and electrical installations in buildings.
- Provide engineering support for cargo-handling infrastructure, including ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes, yard cranes, reefer container power points, automated gate systems, maintenance workshops, and operational control centres.
- Monitor electrical system performance and reliability to ensure uninterrupted port operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve electrical infrastructure capacity, reliability, and operational efficiency.
2. Engineering Design, Review and Procurement
- Prepare and review electrical engineering designs, single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection schemes, load calculations, technical specifications, scopes of work, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
- Ensure electrical designs accommodate future power demand, system redundancy, maintainability, and harsh marine-industrial environmental conditions.
- Support technical procurement by defining equipment requirements, participating in vendor and contractor prequalification, evaluating technical bids, and assessing equipment proposals.
- Review engineering submissions to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and applicable electrical standards.
3. Asset Reliability, Maintenance and Support
- Direct, mentor, supervise, train, and coach in-house field personnel, junior engineers, site inspectors, and subcontractors on electrical works, installation techniques, and quality control procedures.
- Implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies to maximize electrical asset availability and extend equipment service life.
- Lead fault investigations, root-cause analysis (RCA), and technical troubleshooting during electrical outages or system failures to restore power safely and quickly.
- Support annual operating expenditure (OPEX) budgeting, capital expenditure (CAPEX) planning, and the development of short-, medium-, and long-term electrical infrastructure plans.
- Monitor asset condition and recommend rehabilitation, replacement, or upgrading of aging electrical infrastructure.
4. Project Delivery, Testing and Commissioning
- Lead electrical engineering projects from initial concept through design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Coordinate and witness factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), pre-commissioning inspections, and final energized commissioning of new or upgraded electrical installations.
- Manage, supervise, and coordinate electrical contractors, consultants, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and service providers.
- Ensure project activities comply with safety, quality, budget, and schedule requirements.
- Monitor project progress and resolve technical challenges that could affect delivery timelines or operational readiness.
5 . Safety, Statutory Compliance and Sustainability
- Enforce compliance with company health, safety, and environmental requirements, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, safe electrical switching practices, and applicable national and international standards.
- Ensure electrical installations comply with requirements established by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), the Engineers Registration Board (ERB), and applicable IEC, IEEE, and ISO standards.
- Drive energy-efficiency initiatives, power factor correction, equipment electrification, solar photovoltaic (PV) integration, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and port decarbonization initiatives.
- Promote safe working practices among employees, contractors, and technical service providers.
- Identify electrical safety risks and implement appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
6 . Engineering Documentation and Record Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date single-line diagrams, electrical layout drawings, asset registers, protection relay settings, test certificates, and as-built documentation.
- Ensure electrical maintenance records, inspection reports, and equipment documentation are properly maintained.
- Monitor the availability and reliability of MV/LV power distribution networks and electrical supplies serving quay and yard cranes.
- Maintain records demonstrating compliance with electrical safety procedures, LOTO requirements, ERB regulations, and applicable EWURA licensing requirements.
- Prepare technical reports on system performance, electrical faults, project implementation, and asset reliability.
Key Performance Areas
Performance in this role will be assessed against the following areas:
- System Availability: Maximize reliability and operational availability of port MV/LV power supply networks and quay and yard crane electrical infrastructure.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure adherence to electrical safety procedures, LOTO standards, ERB requirements, and applicable EWURA licensing requirements.
- Downtime Minimization: Resolve power disruptions promptly and systematically reduce recurring electrical faults through root-cause analysis.
- Project Execution: Deliver electrical engineering projects on time, within budget, and in accordance with technical specifications.
- Contractor Performance: Maintain effective technical oversight and quality control of electrical contractors, service providers, and OEMs.
- Asset Lifecycle Management: Optimize maintenance and ensure timely replacement or upgrading of aging electrical infrastructure.
- Energy Efficiency: Contribute to energy monitoring, power conservation, renewable energy integration, and sustainability objectives.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
- Active registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB), Tanzania, in the electrical discipline.
- A valid ERB practising licence.
- A valid EWURA Electrical Installation Licence of the appropriate class or category for medium-voltage and heavy industrial port installations.
Experience and Skills Required
Candidates should possess the following professional experience:
- At least ten years of professional experience covering electrical design, project management, power distribution, and industrial asset maintenance.
- At least five years of experience in heavy industrial or critical infrastructure environments, such as container or general cargo ports, marine terminals, power utilities, mining, oil and gas, or heavy manufacturing.
- Demonstrated experience with MV/LV distribution systems, substations, power transformers, high-voltage switchgear, protection relays, industrial automation, reefer networks, generators, and UPS systems.
- Exposure to solar PV systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and port equipment electrification, including electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs) and shore power or cold ironing.
- Professional certifications or training in high-voltage/medium-voltage switching, LOTO, or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification would be an advantage.
Technical Skills and Core Competencies
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Advanced knowledge of MV/LV power distribution, protection coordination, load-flow analysis, fault calculations, and single-line diagram development.
