Basic Purpose
The Manager – Credit Governance is responsible for establishing and maintaining a strong credit governance, policy, control, and oversight framework across Equity Bank Tanzania's credit lifecycle.
The role ensures that credit activities are undertaken in accordance with the Bank's approved Credit Policy, Delegated Authority Matrix, regulatory requirements, risk appetite, approved credit processes, and governance standards.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain and continuously strengthen the Bank's credit governance framework.

Ensure clear governance throughout the credit lifecycle, including:
- Origination
- Appraisal
- Approval
- Documentation
- Disbursement
- Monitoring
- Remedial Management
- Recovery
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties between Business, Credit, Risk, Operations, and Recovery functions.
- Monitor adherence to approved credit governance standards.
- Identify governance weaknesses and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain a centralized register of key credit governance requirements.
- Ensure credit governance practices remain aligned with the Bank's strategic objectives and risk appetite.
- Ensure policies remain relevant to the Bank's portfolio strategy and operating environment.
- Coordinate periodic reviews of credit manuals, product programmes, and lending guidelines.
- Ensure approved policy changes are properly communicated to relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor compliance with the Bank's Delegated Credit Authority Matrix.
- Review and track credit approval exceptions and authority breaches.

Monitor material breaches and report them to the Head of Credit Portfolio Management and relevant governance forums, including:
- Unauthorized approvals
- Approval splitting
- Circumvention of delegated authority
- Unauthorized condition waivers
- Post-approval amendments
- Unapproved limit excesses
- Act as a key coordinator for credit governance forums and ensure that committees operate within their approved mandates.
- Coordinate agendas for relevant credit committees.
- Ensure credit papers are submitted within agreed timelines.
- Maintain accurate minutes and decision records.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive framework for managing credit exceptions.
- Conduct periodic governance reviews of credit files and processes.
- Test compliance with approved credit terms and conditions.
- Review whether actual facilities reflect approved terms.
- Track repeat audit findings and ensure sustainable corrective action.
- Monitor closure of audit issues within agreed timelines.
- Ensure regulatory examination findings are properly addressed.
- Review the end-to-end credit process to identify inefficiencies and control gaps.
- Recommend process improvements that enhance both risk control and customer experience.
- Work with Credit Operations, Technology, and Business teams to automate manual controls.
- Support the development of a strong credit risk culture across the Bank under the Head of Credit Portfolio Management.
- Establish a structured process for converting credit experience into improved underwriting standards.
- Maintain a centralized tracker for all material credit governance decisions and actions.
- Develop regular Credit Governance reports for the Head of Credit Portfolio Management and senior management.
- Develop dashboards that provide management with an early view of emerging governance weaknesses.
Qualifications
- University degree in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
- Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong networking and market intelligence skills.
- Experience working with C-suite professionals and senior management teams.
Experience
- Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in Credit Administration and Governance.
