Request for quotations: Ona Labs UI/UX development consultancy

Consultancy to develop a learner-centered onboarding strategy for AI-based phenotyping tools

The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) invites qualified local and foreign companies, consultancy firms and professional teams to submit quotations for the development of a learner-centered onboarding strategy for Ona Labs’ AI-assisted phenotyping tools.

Through the Google.org project, the Alliance is deploying AI-assisted phenotyping tools to support agricultural breeding programmes. The consultancy will help create a user-friendly, scalable and easy-to-understand interface that reduces onboarding challenges and encourages greater adoption among breeding teams.

Scope of the consultancy

The selected consultant or team will undertake three main workstreams:

• Design, test and refine the Ona Labs onboarding user interface.
• Develop MVP-aligned wireframes and a visual prototype in Figma.
• Conduct remote and on-site user testing with participating breeding teams.
• Prepare recommendations for guiding users through data collection in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
• Produce low-fidelity mock-ups using Figma Make.
• Prepare a deployment-ready implementation ticket and conduct handover meetings with the development team.
• Provide ongoing UI design and maintenance support after the initial handover.

Key deliverables

The consultancy will deliver:

• A detailed working plan.
• Remote and on-site testing plans.
• First and second design drafts.
• A structured team-feedback design iteration.
• An in-field testing report.
• Final wireframes and a visual prototype in Figma.
• A deployment-ready implementation ticket.
• A research report on SOP-aligned data-collection guidance.
• Low-fidelity mock-ups in Figma Make.
• Monthly maintenance-support logs and related design handovers.

Contract period

The consultancy will run for five months:

1 October 2026 to 28 February 2027

Payments will be made monthly against agreed deliverables. Travel expenses will be covered separately from this request for quotations.

Proposal requirements

Interested firms or teams should submit proposals containing:

• Relevant experience in design thinking, user research and interface development.
• A proposed approach and methodology aligned with the assignment.
• A detailed work plan and implementation schedule.
• A comprehensive budget and resource plan.
• Qualifications and experience of the proposed key personnel.

Mandatory statutory documents

Bidders should include the following documents, where applicable:

• Certificate of Incorporation or Registration.
• Business Name Registration Certificate.
• Taxpayer Identification Number Certificate.
• VAT Registration Certificate.
• Valid Tax Clearance Certificate issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority.
• Valid Business Licence.
• Applicable sector-specific licence, registration or permit.
